Your Guide to Renting a Dumpster Bin in the Winter

You might assume you missed your window to tackle that home renovation project. It’s winter, after all. Time to settle in for a few months of hibernation, comfort, the couch and the tv.

Good try.

Contrary to popular belief, winter is a great time to redo your basement, remodel the bathroom, and/or tear out those broken cabinets that’s been bugging you since 2007.

But can you rent a dumpster bin in the snowiest, blowiest season? You bet. Here’s a look at a few things to keep in mind when it comes to winter dumpster rental:

Make Way for the Bin

The majority of garbage removal companies are operational all year round. In order to accommodate the bin, there are some things you need to do prior to bin drop-off. Firstly, move all possible barriers to the safe delivery of a disposal bin from your driveway or yard where the bin is to go. Move cars, other garbage bins and any items that could get in the way. Shovel all snow and ice. Clear out all the room required to safely maneuver yourself for safe disposal of junk into the bin.

Prepare the Area

Winter in Southern Ontario usually means ice and snow. Icy buildup on various materialed walkways and other areas that may be travelled during the process of filling your bin must be tended to. Purchase environmentally friendly melting agents to deal with the ice. If required, buy a bale of hay and use it to cover the path too and from the bin. You can never be too safe when carrying large, awkward junk, construction debris and garbage to your bin.

Put a Tarp on Your Bin

If it starts snowing heavily while the dumpster is in your driveway, you might want to toss a tarp over the top to keep the snow from piling up inside. Usually, any accumulated snow melts, and the water will pour out when the dumpster tilts for emptying. But melted snow in your dumpster can make some items waterlogged. That means they’re heavier. You don’t want to pay any more than you have to, and you sure don’t want to pay to dispose of piled up snow.

Safety First

Don’t underestimate how cold it is. Moist skin and frozen metal don’t mix; keep that in mind. And anything damp will probably freeze in sub-zero temperatures, so be sure to protect yourself when loading your metal bin. Wear proper safety gloves to protect your hands.
