Dumpster Rental for First-Timers: 9 Questions Everyone Asks Before Renting a Bin

Mr. Waste 20 yard bin sitting in a driveway.

Most people only rent a dumpster a handful of times in their lives: a big renovation, a move, an estate cleanout, a major landscaping project. So it’s completely normal to have questions. After more than 40 years serving Milton, Oakville, Burlington, and Mississauga, we’ve heard them all. Here are the nine questions every first-time renter asks, answered plainly.

1. How does dumpster rental actually work?

It’s a four-step process. You book a bin online or by phone and tell us your project. We deliver the roll-off bin directly to your driveway or job site using a specially designed truck with hydraulic equipment. You fill it at your own pace. When you’re done, you call us and we promptly haul it away. No truck rentals, no dump runs, no stress.

2. What is a roll-off bin, exactly?

Unlike stationary dumpsters (the kind permanently parked behind a store), roll-off bins are designed to be delivered, placed, and removed easily. They have open tops for easy loading, and every Mr. Waste bin includes back doors so you can walk debris straight in instead of lifting everything over the side. If you’re working on multiple areas of a property, the bin can even be repositioned.

3. What size should I get?

Our bins range from 6 to 40 cubic yards, and the measurement refers to volume, not length. As a rough guide:

  • 6-yard: garage cleanouts, small landscaping jobs, small bathroom remodels, storefront waste. Holds about 3 truckloads.
  • 10-yard: household debris removal, roofing jobs, medium renovations. Holds 3 to 5 truckloads.
  • 14-yard: floor removals, concrete, full bathroom remodels, big landscaping jobs. Holds about 6 truckloads.
  • 20-yard: demolition projects, whole-room renovations, large seasonal cleanups. Holds about 7 truckloads.
  • 40-yard: large construction and demolition sites. Holds about 12 truckloads.

When in doubt, describe your project to us. Right-sizing saves you money in both directions: no paying for empty space, no overfill surprises.

4. Where will the bin go, and will it damage my driveway?

Most residential bins sit on the driveway. Tell us your preferred spot when you book, and make sure the area is clear of vehicles on delivery day. Our drivers know how to place bins carefully, and our local knowledge of Milton, Oakville, Burlington, and Mississauga streets and driveways is exactly why our deliveries are smooth and on time. If you’re concerned about surface protection, laying down plywood under the contact points is a simple extra precaution.

5. Do I need a permit?

If the bin sits entirely on your own property, a permit generally isn’t required. If it must be placed on a public street or right-of-way, your municipality may require one, so check local rules or ask us when you book and we’ll point you in the right direction.

6. What’s not allowed in the bin?

The big ones: paint and paint cans, batteries, asbestos, motor oil and fuels, propane tanks, tires, pesticides, harsh cleaning chemicals, and contaminated soil. These are hazardous materials that require special disposal at a household hazardous waste depot or through licensed handlers. Food waste should also stay out, since it attracts pests. When in doubt about an item, just ask. We’d much rather answer a quick question.

7. How full can I fill it?

Load up to the top rail, but no higher. There needs to be enough clearance to tarp the bin safely for transport. Also keep weight in mind: each size has a weight limit (about 1,200 pounds for the 6-yard up to 5-6 tons for the 40-yard), and heavy materials like brick, concrete, and soil reach those limits quickly. If your project is heavy-material focused, mention it when booking so we can size accordingly.

8. What happens to my junk after pickup?

This is the part we’re proudest of. Everything Mr. Waste collects is separated and sorted at a full-service recycling facility according to provincial standards. Recyclables get recycled, landfill volume gets minimized, and Ontario’s landfill life gets extended. Your cleanout has the smallest environmental footprint we can give it.

9. How do I book, and how fast can I get a bin?

Booking takes minutes: order online at mrwaste.ca or call (905) 845-9240. Because we’re local and family operated, our scheduling is fast and flexible. During busy seasons (spring and fall especially), booking a week ahead guarantees your size and date.
