Where Should the Dumpster Go? A Homeowner’s Guide to Bin Placement and Delivery Day Prep

You’ve picked your bin size, you know the rules, and delivery day is booked. One question remains, and it’s the one first-timers think about least until the truck is on the street: where exactly should the bin go?
Placement sounds trivial, but it shapes your whole rental. The right spot makes loading effortless and keeps the neighbours happy. The wrong spot means carrying debris twice as far for a week. Here’s how homeowners across Milton, Oakville, Burlington, and Mississauga should think it through, plus a simple delivery day prep list.
The Driveway Is Usually the Answer
For most residential rentals, the driveway is the ideal home for the bin, for three reasons:
- It’s your property, which means no permit is generally required. Bins placed on a public street or right-of-way may need municipal approval, so staying on the driveway keeps things simple.
- It’s a hard, flat surface, which is exactly what a loaded bin wants to sit on.
- It’s close to the work, whether the debris is coming from the garage, the house, or the backyard gate.
Tell us your preferred spot when you book. Our drivers place bins carefully using specially designed trucks with hydraulic equipment, and after 40+ years on local streets and driveways, precise placement is routine for us.
Picking the Exact Spot
A few metres can make a real difference over a weekend of loading. Think through:
The debris path. Place the bin between where the waste is coming from and the shortest walking route. If you’re gutting the basement, that’s near the walkout or garage door, not at the end of the driveway.
The back doors. Every Mr. Waste bin has back doors, so orient the bin with the doors facing your loading route. That way you (and your wheelbarrow) walk debris straight in instead of lifting it over the side, which matters more with every load.
Your vehicles. The bin will be there for the length of your rental, so make sure the car you use daily isn’t trapped behind it. Measure twice: our bins range from about 10 feet long (6-yard) to 20 feet long (20 and 40-yard).
Overhead clearance. The truck needs vertical room to lift and lower the bin, so avoid spots directly under low branches, wires, or eaves. When in doubt, ask us when you book.
Water flow. Skip low spots where rain pools. October in the GTA has opinions about that.
Protecting Your Driveway
Bins are designed to sit on residential driveways, and careful placement is part of our job. If you’d like extra peace of mind, especially on newer asphalt or decorative surfaces, lay plywood sheets where the bin’s contact points will rest. It’s a five-minute precaution that spreads the load and prevents marks, and it’s the same trick contractors use on finished surfaces.
Delivery Day Prep: The 10-Minute Checklist
The morning before your bin arrives:
- Move all vehicles out of the placement area and off the immediate approach.
- Clear the spot of anything movable: basketball nets, planters, kids’ toys, garbage cans.
- Put down plywood if you’re using it.
- Confirm the placement spot is visible and obvious (a quick text or note about “left side of driveway, doors facing the garage” saves everyone time).
- Make sure someone can be reached by phone in case the driver has a question. You don’t need to be home, but reachable helps.
That’s it. The hydraulic drop itself takes only minutes, and then the bin is yours to fill at your own pace.
When Pickup Day Comes
When the bin is full (to the top rail, never above, so it can be tarped safely), one call to (905) 845-9240 brings us back. Keep the area around the bin clear on pickup day, just like delivery, so the truck can hook up and go. From there, the entire load heads to our full-service recycling facility, where it’s separated and sorted to provincial standards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a rental dumpster go on the street in front of my house?
Sometimes, but a public street or right-of-way may require municipal permission, and rules vary by city. The driveway avoids the question entirely. Ask us when you book and we’ll point you in the right direction for your address.
Will the bin damage my driveway?
Our drivers place bins carefully, and driveways handle bins routinely. For extra protection on new or decorative surfaces, plywood under the contact points is a simple safeguard.
How much space does the truck need to deliver a bin?
Enough length for the truck to back in and tilt the bin down, plus overhead clearance free of branches and wires. Describe your driveway when you book and we’ll confirm the logistics before delivery day.
Can the bin be moved once it’s placed?
Don’t drag a bin yourself. If your project shifts and the bin needs repositioning, call us and we’ll handle it with the right equipment.
